Shari Poquiz @themistymom

Introducing my first Beautylista Babe, Shari Poquiz. She is the epitome of a true Beautylista — a beautiful, kind, strong, determined, and empowered woman. A beauty that goes beyond what the eyes can see. It was fun giving her a glow job and peeking into her current favourite makeup and skincare products! Yes, you’re welcome!

Shari Poquiz, @themistymom

Angela: How did you come up with the name misty mom? What does it mean?

Shari: I like facial mists! Just kidding! Actually, there’s no deep meaning into it. I wanted to start a mom blog because I was pregnant. Misty was the first thing I came up with and the word fits the logo I was making. What it means, it’s a mystery.

How did you become a blogger?

I was pregnant and I had really bad morning sickness when I started my blog. I was in the bathroom half of the day so I had to quit my corporate job. I was so used to being busy coming from a demanding media job so I had all that free time. I was making websites since I was 10, and I really liked designing and writing, so blogging became my creative outlet during that time. I didn’t want to be idle. I gravitated towards beauty blogging because I was having a girl and for the first time in my life, I was attracted to lipsticks. I never wore them before, but when I got pregnant, I finally found myself in the Mac counters looking for a red lipstick which I never wore before.

My mom blog became a beauty blog. I wrote about beauty more because motherhood was a sensitive topic online. Being a first time mom then, I didn’t want to engage in it, and playing with makeup was a break for me at times when I got overwhelmed with motherhood. I would even connect with women from different countries about makeup with no judgements, which I really liked, then I started to shift my blog towards motherhood. I connected with moms who wanted to feel good about themselves and experiment with makeup, mostly the millennial moms.

What is your day and night skin care routine?

During the day, I don’t really put on a lot. I use the La Mer Moisturizing Matte Lotion. It’s just light and it can be layered under makeup. For foundation, I use Clinique Fit, I use it as day time makeup. It’s super lightweight because it’s watery, it has SPF 40, and it has medium coverage. It also stays on even if I sweat. For events, I use the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation mixed with Mac Strobe Cream because I don’t like it to feel so heavy. It is super high coverage, and I don’t need to wear concealer anymore.

Makeup Base

At night, I used to do the 9-step Korean routine but I think my skin wasn’t used to it, so I paired down and I went back to what worked for me. What really worked for me is the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair. No joke guys! I’ve used this for 5 years. I always go back to it and I always have a back up of this. I also have the Estee Lauder Intense Recovery Ampules which I just started using last year. It’s a more concentrated version of the night repair serum. I really like this. When I wake up in the morning, ayoko mag hilamos (I don’t want to wash my face.) My skin becomes soft, smooth and I don’t break out with it. After the serum, I use the La Prairie White Caviar Illuminating Moisturizing Cream. It’s the only product that I can vouch for that brightened and whitened me a bit, even my mom swears by it. It also helps brighten the under eyes. I don’t use eye cream so I just use the Patchology Rejuvenating Eye Gel. I use it twice a week. My undereyes are brighter when I wake up. I also use the the day version of this at night. It has caffeine so it de puffs the under eye. My facial wash is Neogen Green Tea Real Fresh Foam Cleanser. It calms my breakouts. When I have thick make up on, I double cleanse and use the Banila Co Clean It Zero or Estee Lauder Micro Cleansing Balm to remove my makeup before using my cleanser.

Nighttime Essentials

What are your ride or die products?

My ride or die makeup is the Mac Pro Longwear Concealer. I can go out without kilay (eyebrows) but I cannot go out without concealer. My favorite highlighter is from Gerard Cosmetics Star Powder in Audrey. For bronzer, I like the Guerlain Terracotta. I like Benefit Hoola also because it is cooler toned. For the lips, I like the Pixie Matte Liquid Lipstick. What I love about it is that it’s super lightweight, but not drying on lips. My lips are sensitive, it peels and bleeds at the touch of super dry lipsticks so this one has been the most tolerable, and lasts long on me. They don’t bleed like other lipsticks. For eyeshadow, Tom Ford Eye Quad in Coco Mirage and Orchid Haze eyeshadows are worth it for me, for someone who doesn’t know how to put eyeshadow on. It blends easily and doesn’t get patchy. I would use my finger and just rub the eyeshadow on my lids, then I would get compliments from people — that’s when I realized they’re worth it.

Holy Grail Makeup

My favorite scent is Aerin Ikat Jasmine. I really like perfumes. Okay na na hindi pansin yung makeup ko pero gusto ko maalala how I smell. (It’s okay if people don’t notice my make up, I want people to remember my scent.) That’s the impression I want to leave and scents evoke memories. Kahit wala kang kilay basta mabango ka! (It’s okay not to have eyebrows, as long as you smell good!)

Favorite scents

I have to say that Aveda really changed my hair. I’ve been colouring my hair for the longest time so it became dry and damaged. Ever since I used the Aveda Damage Remedy shampoo, conditioner and hair mask, my hair has been stronger. I can attest to that because I have been wanting to do this treatment in the salon to relax my hair but they refused to do it because my hair was too dry and damaged. I kept asking them if my hair was ready, and they kept saying no. Three months of using the shampoo, I went back to the salon, they tested my hair, and it became stronger — they finally allowed me to do it! So these really work! I also use Aveda Color Conserve to protect my ash colour so it doesn’t get brassy. I apply Aveda Smooth Infusion on my damp hair and it helps remove frizziness and straighten my wavy hair without effort.

Hair Heroes

You look so fit now! How do you take care of  your body?

I just started and I’m not an expert at this. I’m still learning as I go. When I was in college, I thought I could just diet so that my body will look good and be thin, but I was really far from being truly fit. I recently went back to the gym and had a fitness test. Warm up palang I felt like fainting already. Nag black na yung vision ko! I felt so bad. I regret not doing any exercise even just at home after I gave birth, that’s 6 years of sedentary lifestyle, just running after kids and lifting them. Going up the stairs was a burden. What made me feel guilty was when my kids asked me to play hide and seek and I got tired easily. I had to sit down right away because I couldn’t keep up with them — that’s when I really decided to go back to the gym. I’m also trying to eat clean. I eat more vegetables now, and drink lots of water. I’m doing it little by little, baby steps — that’s what I tell my followers now who feel like I’m suddenly this fit woman. I am far from it. I still want to do yoga and try to build my endurance. One day at a time!

Yultide Gorg Hair and Makeup Workshop

Before the end of 2018, We set up a hair and makeup workshop to help women prepare for the December holiday parties. I collaborated with my hairstylist friend and colleague in the beauty industry, Mycke Arcano. We met in Mega Fashion Crew — a reality show we were both part of in 2011. Since then, we’ve been working together in various weddings, shoots, and gigs. He is very talented, hardworking, funny, and easy going. Basically, he was the one for the job, and he nailed it!

Collaboration with Mycke Arcano

I taught basic makeup and the most fool proof way to do a winged liner, for that instant glam effect. Here are some snippets from the basic makeup workshop:

I used the australis banana powder to prep and powder the lids before applying eyeshadow. Applying powder makes the eye shadow apply smoothly.
Tape trick to for an easy perfect eyeliner flick.
I wet the eyeshadow if i want the pigments to become more intense. Using Mac Fix Plus here.
Highlighting using the happy skin highlighter pen! See that glow?
Sharing my tips on foundation
The brows are the frames of the face! Keep it more straight for a more youthful look.
Here I am applying the australis banana powder to set concealer. It gives a more airbrushed flawless look

Mycke talked to us about face shapes and hairstyles suited for each face shape.

He also showed us a few hairstyles inspired by the 90’s that we can easily replicate at home.

Dyson Airwrap

It was love at first sight for me and my Dyson Airwrap! This product is a dream tool for a girl with thin and flat hair! My tresses are very low maintenance. I’m a wash and go kind of girl, simply because my hair is straight, fine, and thin, so it just dries out naturally and keeps itself straight. I have always wanted to have wavy voluminous hair, but it seems so difficult and time consuming to use a hair curler everyday. I have one, and have slightly burned myself a couple of times while using it. The Dyson Airwrap uses the coanda effect to style hair without extreme heat. It doesn’t damage the hair whilst still keeping it shiny. The complete set has 2 sets of barrels, a round volumizing brush, pre styling dryer, and smoothing brushes. Imagine all the looks you can do with this innovative hair tool! It’s such a hair game changer for me and I love it!

Posting a video about how I achieve the causal curls using my Airwrap. I use multiple hair products for the curls to hold because my hair is super fine. I hope this tutorial helps you. It takes a few tries to get used to it, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes so easy to use!

Benefit Brow Contour Pro

I was anticipating the launch of this product as soon as I saw it in one of the Benebabes’ instagram stories! Benefit had me at the mechanical pencil packaging. It’s too cute! I felt nostalgic, as it brought me back to my yesteryears in school! lol.

Aside from having a cute packaging, I thought it was very clever and practical to have an all-in-one eyebrow product. The brow contour pro has a lighter shade for the inner part of the brow and a darker one for the arch to the tip. I always do this ombré technique as it makes the brows look a lot more natural. It also has a concealer to define and clean up the brows, and a highlighter to bring light to the brow bone. I like that the product is long lasting too! It was still visible after an intense class of indoor cycling. I just wonder how long the product will last, I hope it doesn’t run out so quickly since it’s a compact all-in-one pen packaging.

I have received a number of questions on how to use it. So here’s a quick tutorial for you. It’s my first time to film, edit, and record voice over using my phone hence the difference in quality. I just wanted to get things done quickly and edit while lying down. lol. Enjoy the tutorial! Let me know if you bought one and love it as much as I do! 🙂

Yellow Eyeshadow

I have been a tad bit bored with using neutrals on my eyes. So lately, I have been playing with colour. I received a lot of compliments when I wore this yellow eyeshadow in an event. It surely brought sunshine to my day. I’m breaking it down for those who are interested to do this on themselves. Feeling a little brave? Surprise yourself and try this look ! I matched it with a yellow dress for a monochromatic look! Enjoy!

Bridal Collection 2018

Bridal makeup is close to my heart. I did my sister’s and one of my best friend’s bridal makeup and it feels so special to be with brides on one of the most memorable days of their lives, especially if the bride is someone close to you. There is pressure in doing bridal makeup, but it is very rewarding especially when your brides give you a note of appreciation or when the groom tells you that you made his bride the most beautiful version of herself. For this bridal shoot, I was so happy to finally be able to work with my sister-in-law and talented wedding fashion designer, Hallie Vy Yeo, for her 2018 collection.

Glow Makeup Workshop

Achieving luminous skin has never been this hot! (but nothing will still beat the Manila heat!) Call it what you want, the glass skin or the dewy dumpling is the look you would want to try right now. Last May, I had my first solo makeup workshop, no collaborations, just me and my slight obsession with the glow.

This is the glass skin look I did for a bridal shoot that I wanted to teach my students:

The key to glowing skin happens before the makeup. I use a serum or an essence and a moisturiser on dry areas of the face, avoiding the naturally oily parts of the skin and areas with large pores. I top it off with a light to medium coverage foundation, use a cream blush, and add a generous amount of highlighter. I dust powder only on my t-zone and sides of the nose. Voila! I get a fresh and glowing base!

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of this workshop and all our generous sponsors, this event will not be possible without you. Thanks Calyxta for lending us your cool space once again. It’s always a safe makeup haven for us! Thank you Belo for our gift cards, it will surely  help our participants achieve glowing skin. Belo helped me clear my forehead bumps. Thank you Nuxe for the goodie bag and your continuous support. I’m happy that our winners will get to try your famous dry oil. It’s my favorite post shower oil before I go to bed! It smells divine and keeps the skin soft. Thank you Benefit for the fab goodies and prizes. My participants are always happy to receive goodies from you. Thank you Boggy for assisting the ladies and for being my co-makeup artist. Thank you Cathy Ang for always taking lovely photos. Thanks Olga for being so nice to work with. Last but not least, thanks Little Red Riding Hood styling for our summer backdrop!
